The Growth of the Texas Aging Population
According to the U.S. Census Bureau in 2010 there were an estimated 3.7 million persons in Texas over the age of 60. This figure represents about 14% of the estimated 25 million Texans.
The 60 and older population in Texas is expected to increase by nearly 50 percent between 2010 and 2040, with a greater than 50 percent increase in those aged 85 and older by 2020.
Texas is also home to 5.2 million baby boomers who will all be at least 65 years of age by 2030. And out of the 34 to 44 million informal caregivers throughout the United States approximately 2 .7 million are in Texas.
